Prenatal Care

The pelvis is a 4 bone ring comprised of the sacrum - a triangular bone at the base of your spine, the tailbone attached to the sacrum, and the two hipbones. These four bones are held together by ligaments and connective tissue.

Maintaining alignment between the pelvic bones, joints and ligaments brings balance to the uterus and is so important for a safe delivery – for both mom and baby. When the uterus is balanced, the baby is better able to adopt an ideal birthing position. Chiropractic care can help correct any imbalance in the pelvis, allowing baby to move into the best position for vaginal delivery, and prepares the pelvis to open fully during labour. A study done in 1990 showed mothers that were under chiropractic care throughout their pregnancies had reduced labour times - 25% less time for first time mothers, and 31% less time for experienced mothers.

Relief of Pain and Discomfort

An average pregnancy will see a weight gain of 25-35 pounds over a relatively short period of time, putting stress and strain on your ligaments, muscles, tendons and joints. At the same time, hormonal changes are taking place including the release of relaxin in the body – a hormone that relaxes the ligaments of the pelvis and lumbar spine in preparation for delivery. As the ligaments become more relaxed any instability in your body can be amplified.Such strain can be the source of great discomfort as your body changes to make room for your growing baby. Dr. Chelsea can help relieve these aches and pains by restoring your body to proper alignment.
